The Holidays and Heroes Program assists families in need during the holiday season. We do this with the support of the Spokane County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, Spokane County Sheriff’s Chaplaincy Services, Spokane County Sheriff’s Community Oriented Policing Effort (S.C.O.P.E.), Spokane Valley Police Department, Spokane County Detention Services, and several community businesses.
Holidays and Heroes enables us to connect with children and their families who need food and gifts for Christmas. This interaction provides a fun way to get to know the youngsters and discuss staying in school, avoiding drugs, and staying out of trouble while showing them that Deputies and our other partners are here and willing to help.
The families receive a food basket that includes at least one complete holiday meal, fruit, milk, juice, healthy snacks, canned goods, vegetables, and more.
On the day of the event, children are picked up at their homes by Deputies/Officers in patrol cars to go shopping, and then they meet Santa and have lunch.
Scores of volunteers wrap the youngster’s presents and prepare a large food basket. Afterward, all the gifts and food are loaded into the patrol cars, and the children are brought home with smiles on their faces, lasting memories, and several new friends in law enforcement.
The heart of Holidays and Heroes is the children and their families, but it’s the collective effort of our volunteers, Deputies/Officers, and the community that makes it possible. Holidays and Heroes reminds all of us that we should help those in need, be positive role models, and the need to give back to our community.
We strive to support as many families as possible, and your participation is crucial. Holidays and Heroes in Spokane County spends approximately $ 10,000 or more each year helping families in our community, and it is only possible with your help and the support of our local businesses.
