Air 1 Leads Ground Units to Wanted Suspect and Juvenile Male

Spokane Regional Air Support Unit (SRASU) Air 1 assisted the Spokane Police Department (SPD) Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF), SWAT Team members, and U.S. Marshals Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force (PNVOTF) with apprehending a wanted and violent felon on March 28, 2024.  A juvenile male in the vehicle was also arrested for felony Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.

On March 28, 2024, at approximately 6:05 pm, Spokane Regional Air Support Unit (SRASU) Air 1 began tracking a suspect vehicle, assisting SPD VCTF and U.S. Marshal PNVOTF as they worked to apprehend a wanted violent offender, 27-year-old Keantray D. Bryant-Muellner.

Air 1 picked up the suspect vehicle in the Spokane Valley Mall parking lot and provided live updated information to law enforcement on the ground.  As a plan to safely take the suspect into custody was devised, Air 1 continued to track the suspect vehicle from high above.

The suspect vehicle traveled west on E. Indiana Avenue and north on Pines to the Maverick Gas Station.  The truck then returned to N. Pines and traveled west on I-90 before taking the Sprague Avenue exit and going west on Sprague Avenue.  At Havana Street, the suspect vehicle turned south, then west on E. Hartson Avenue, and south on Freya Street.  At 55th Avenue, the suspect vehicle turned west before parking in the 3300 block of E. 55th Avenue at approximately 6:35 pm.

Short Video:  At approximately 7:00 pm, additional ground units, including a contingent of SPD SWAT members, were now in position.  They quickly moved in, with emergency lights activated, and blocked avenues of escape.

Bryant-Muellner jumped out of the truck’s passenger side and fled on foot northwest toward an apartment building.  Even though Bryant-Muellner was given commands to stop, he chose to flee.

Not knowing if Bryant-Muellner was armed and with his violent history, law enforcement quickly moved to block his possible entry into the apartments, and an SPD K9 was released to help apprehend him.  As Officers closed in, Bryant-Muellner surrendered, and the K9 was recalled before making contact.

Bryant-Muellner was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail on his warrants for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm 1st Degree (four counts), Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Assault 4th Degree (DV), and a Washington State Department of Corrections Escape Community Custody Hold.

A 17-year-old juvenile male was arrested for a new charge of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm 2nd Degree and booked into the Spokane County Juvenile Detention Center.

SRASU Air 1 flight crew consisted of Pilot Don Kresse, Spokane Valley Fire Department; Tactical Flight Officer C. Ruff, Spokane Valley Police Department; and Tactical Flight Officer C. Ruff, and Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Sergeant Jason Karnitz.
